AMY’S PRINTS

Woodcuts, etchings, and everything in between.

Here you’ll find unique one of a kind prints along with editioned prints. Multi media prints are from a new series of recycling older prints and revisiting old matrices. To help you understand what you’re looking at here are some brief explanations of the processes.

Images that have a fine line and detail are typically etchings. Intaglio is a process that involves drawing or developing tone on a metal plate such as zinc, copper, or brass. The intaglio method of printing involves drawing or incising an image into a metal plate with various tools. The two types of intaglio printing are engraving and etching. In engraving the image is cut into the plate with tools called needles, burnishers, scrapers or rockers. In etching the image is drawn into the plate with a scribe and then placed in acid at timed intervals. A wide variety of methods gives this medium enormous range.

Prints that have bold shapes or rough textures tend to be relief prints. Woodcut and linocut are produced differently than intaglio. The process of a making relief print involves carving away the surface of the material that is then inked with a brayer. The raised surface area holds the ink and the carved away sections do not appear in the print. Soft woods like birch or battleship linoleum are typically what’s used in the relief approach.

Also intermingled here are monotypes, stencils, and screenprinting.
